The Algarve has been a favourite for Brits to own holiday homes. It has many different towns and resorts from bustling seaside and golf resorts to quiet and attractive towns. It has something to offer most people. A couple of examples of the beaches in the Eastern Algarve is shown below.

Set out below is some information on selected locations which you may find useful.

Tavira

This town is a gem that few are familiar with. It’s situated next to beaches which are reached by regular ferries and water taxis. They offer vast expanses of sand and because of their size do not become as crowded as those in many holiday destinations.

The town offers a selection of traditional bars and restaurants in beautiful small squares and along the river, which passes through the town.

It is a hub for public transport offering rail connections to Faro and to the Spanish border where a ferry can take you to Ayemonte at the western end of Spain’s Costa de la Luz. Buses leave from the bus station to many destinations including Seville.

It’s a perfect location for those that want to avoid the lively resorts popular with young tourists and stag parties.

Vilamoura

Vilamoura is a purpose built golf and beach resort.

It offers a wide range of activities and experiences. It has lively bars, a casino and nightclubs. The restaurants and bars built around an exclusive marina offer a large choice so that all tastes are catered for. A waterpark is located near by and there are five exceptional golf courses and some magnificent beaches close by. For those times where you want get away from it all you can stroll through local pine forests.

The beaches are safe, with clean and calm sea waters, and are supervised in the summer.

Lagos

Lagos is located on the western Algarve. It retains its distinctive character. Its historic centre has cobbled streets with traditional Portugese restaurants. Whilst there has been a programme of holiday home building recently the city has not encouraged mass tourism.

In 2012 Lagos received the QualityCoast Gold Award for its efforts to become a sustainable tourism destination.

There is marina complex which includes bars and restaurants in the lovely harbour. The beaches include the 4km long Praia de Porto Mós and others in some of the coves along a coastline which also features stunning rock formations.

Albufiera

Albufeira is a resort a few miles west of Vilamoura. Its buzzing atmosphere is an attraction for families and young holidaymakers. During the holiday season there are a large array of activities to choose from.

There are two very different areas within the resort situated 2kms apart. The old town has charming old streets with a large number of bars and restaurants. The Strip is a much newer and louder area frequented by partying young people.

Faro

Faro is the main town in the Algarve and is where the airport is situated. It is a much underrated city. It is full of culture and offers interesting attractions to visit. It has a historic walled quarter with a cathedral and palace. Outside the walls are shopping areas and attractive squares.

Just outside the city is the natural park with saltwater lagoons teaming with wildlife and an important area for migratory birds. The beaches located on sandbars can be reached by ferry
